The Wines of Austria, Germany & Alsace - 6 Bottle Sampler #1 - Dry Riesling
A $77.5 value for just $59
We're kicking off A-G-A (Austria, Germany & Alsace) Wine Month with a sampler of dry Rieslings. We absolutely love the complexity and versatility of sweeter style Rieslings but understand that today most white wine drinkers are looking for dryer style wines. Unfortunately most of these white wine lovers only associate this amazing white grape with sweet wines. If you've been fortunate enough to travel to central Europe then you probably already know that they ship out the sweet styles to other parts of the world and are keeping most of the delicious dry examples close to home. If you love dry white wines, ignore the tall slender bottles of crisp, refreshing deliciousness to your own detriment!!!
Sampler includes one bottle each:
Von Buhl "Bone Dry" Riesling (Germany) - It's right there in the name, this gorgeous, mouth wateringly delicious Riesling if from the Pfalz region of Germany and is totally dry. Bright and lively with distinctive aromas of fresh peach and apricot, counterbalanced by an edge of flint and minerality. Full and intense on the palate with a little fleshiness and real approachability. Excellent length. High quality dry Riesling, vibrant, precise finish with a fresh grapefruit tang. Good length with a vibrant, precise finish of fresh grapefruit. Drink on its own as an apéritif or pair with fish dishes and hors d’oeuvres.
Kuentz-Bas Riesling (Alsace)- Unless you reach for a dessert Riesling produced on the French side of the border, you can count on a Riesling from Alsace on being much drier that what your are probably used to, despite the tall, skinny bottle it comes in. Inviting aromas of orange blossom, white peach, lime and lovely mineral nuances all emerging from the glass. On the palate this is beautifully textured, with a vibrant and energetic mouthfeel underlined by lively acidity and minerality that leaves your palate watering through the finish.
Basserman-Jordan Riesling Trocken (Germany) - Basserman-Jordan sticks to the classic German term for "Dry -Trocken" for their succulent example. Estate grown, all organic/biodynamic farming, and fermenting in stainless steel tanks utilizing spontaneous, native yeast fermentation to preserve freshness and the unique qualities of their fantastic terroir. Lovely aromas of white flowers on the nose with a palate of apricots, bright apples and pears with well-balanced acidity.
Karp-Schreiber "Dry Karp" Riesling Trocken (Germany) - Mosel Rieslings are famous for their backbone of blue slate minerality that shines through even the sweeter examples, but here we have another Dry/Trocken style example. Passed down through the generations, Karp-Schreiber estate has been family-owned since 1664, and is today owned and managed by “JJ” Jobst-Julius Karp since the recent retirement of his father in 2008. Notes of zesty lemon and lime waft from the nose of this vibrant Riesling. It’s a spine-tingling, juicy quaffer loaded with cutting white grapefruit and crystalline mineral tones. The finish is long, marked by a lacy veil of fresh fruit and a hint of musky floral perfume.
Weingut Tegernseerhof Riesling Dürnstein Federspiel (Austria) - Martin Mittelbach is the 5th generation to run the family estate, organically farming vineyards that go back over 1000 years. Bright yellow gold in the glass, fine aromas of spring flowers and mango on the nose, delicately mineral, juicy on the palate, beautiful ripe fruit notes, balanced acidity, sunny disposition and animating with every sip.
Fitz-Ritter Pfalz Riesling Extra-Troken Sekt (Germany) - Going to have to stretch our definition of "Dry" a little bit here to include what I would call off-dry for the Sparkling. The "Extra-Troken" was shipped to our distributor by mistake (and thus to us) as both bins in their warehouse are full of the Extra Troken. Like Extra-Dry on a Prosecco bottle, Extra-Trocken doesn't mean "more dry" but rather a little extra sugar is left in the wine. That said, the carbonation and vibrant acidity combine to offset the sweetness and deliver a delightful, easy drinking bubbly. Golden yellow bright in the glass with dense perlage. Intense scent of classic ripe and sun-drenched Riesling aromatics such as peach, apple peels, yellow flowers, mandarin, nutty and buttery aromas.
